Web Hosting Features
We are continually adding new features
to our hosting accounts and some items may incur setup costs and / or a small
additional monthly charge. Additional charges would ONLY apply if a client requests the new features and the price has been agreed.
Web Space
Your Web Space is the amount of disk space on the
server you are allowed to use and is dependent on your hosting
plan.
This space is used
to store all your email plus all the files needed for your website,
including HTML files, image files, CGI scripts, multimedia files,
and any
other
files.
You can monitor how much space you are
using in your Personal Control Panel (PCP).
Personal Control Panel (PCP)
The PCP allows you to administer user, FTP,
site, and mail list settings. It has features for site back-ups
and restores and allows you to view disk and web usage. The PCP
is an excellent, intuitively easy, tool for beginners to advanced
users alike.
Data Transfer
Data transfer is the amount of data sent to and from your domain,
basically a measure of how popular your site is. A large part of
this traffic is web traffic (website visitors) but can also be
FTP (file uploads and downloads), Anonymous FTP, and even email.
You can monitor how much data transfer you are using in your PCP - the maximum allowed is dependent on your hosting plan.
WordPress Content Management System (CMS)
WordPress is probably the most popular CMS on the market. WordPress is a feature rich, powerful and affordable online CMS suitable
for small business, churches, voluntary sector, non-profit organisations
and personal use. Users don't need to know HTML to add or edit
pages.
WordPress plugins contain a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress website. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress.
Email Accounts
Each Email account can have its own distinct login and password
and allows for the sending and retrieving of e-mail. You can easily
setup your Email user accounts by logging into your personal
control panel. You will have a minimum of 100 accounts but
most customers will probably not use more than 10.
Web Email
You can easily check your email when you are away from your computer.
All mickwood.com clients receive unlimited access to their email
via a web browser. You can send and receive email from anywhere
in the world.
Email Auto Responders & Aliasing
Auto Responders are automatic email messages sent from the server
in response to someone who emails your email address.
Alias emails are different from POP3 Emails. These are virtual
email accounts that are actually forwarded to another email account.
Email Auto Responders and Aliasing may be added or edited easily
using your PCP.
FREE Domain Name Registration
Unlike some web hosting providers, mickwood.com does NOT charge
anything for new domain registration or renewal although, of course, an
annual fee applies for each domain name we register or renew on your behalf.
The
annual
fee is dependent on the type of domain and the length of the registration
period. Current domain name registration periods and prices are
listed on the site.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
FTP is the process of transferring your web pages and graphics
from your computer to the server.
You can create additional
FTP accounts in real-time, set the startup directory on such
users, and delete extra accounts automatically. You can create
and modify
FTP accounts using your PCP. FTP access is
unrestricted giving you the ability to make changes to your web
site at all
times.
Sub-Domains
Sub-domains allow for the use of URLs like subdomain.yourdomain.com.
Any visitor which mistypes a sub-domain URL will be directed to
your virtual domain website. This ensures no visitors are lost
due to mistakes.
CGI-Bin
CGI & Perl scripts are programs or scripts that add interactivity
and enable dynamic capabilities for your site. mickwood.com maintains
the latest version of CGI on all web servers and has installed
all commonly requested Perl modules. Any other required module
can be installed upon request.
mySQL / mSQL
MySQL is a
true multi-user, multi-threaded SQL database. MySQL is a client/server
implementation that consists of a server daemon and many different
client programs and libraries.
PHP
PHP is a server-side, cross-platform, HTML embedded scripting
language. PHP is especially popular with those who use mySQL as
PHP can be used as a front-end to mySQL databases. Working with
mySQL and PHP can be extremely powerful, allowing you to create
a web-interface to mySQL database tables. We keep our versions
of PHP as up to date as possible.
Ruby on Rails
Ruby on Rails in an open-source web framework that's optimized for sustainable productivity.
With your mickwood.com account you'll be able to deploy applications and Gems on your own through your control panel.
Perl, Python, TCL Compilers, Server Side Includes(SSI), Java Servlets (Tomcat)
Perl, Python, TCL Compilers, Server Side Includes(SSI), and Java Servlets are available for scripts or programs. We always
update these languages to the most stable releases when possible.
This allows you to take full advantage of improvements and new
additions to the software.
Cron Jobs
A Cron Job editor is available for setting up the execution of
scripts/programs at a set period of time.
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
Secure Sockets Layer(SSL) is a protocol which encrypts all data
communicated between the client and the server, to ensure that
there will be no intercepts of the data by third parties. In order
to use SSL on your web site, you will need to purchase a SSL certificate
from a third party SSL provider.
Customisable Error Pages
Never lose a visitor again because of missing pages or server
errors. Customise your own pages to intercept lost visitors when
something
goes wrong.
Access To Raw Logs
Raw access and error logs can be downloaded from the web site
PCP or by FTP.
Detailed Website Statistics
Our detailed website statistics programs are fun, intuitive,
and easy-to-use. Even with its advanced reporting features it is
extremely
usable, even for the novice.
Daily Site Backups
Each web site has the ability to be backed up and restored daily.
Note that mickwood.com does NOT backup sites on its' customers
behalf. It is your responsibility to backup your files and data.
Online & Email Support
http://www.mickwood.com/support is
the first place to look for technical support. If you can't find
the answer to your problem you can email who will answer all your questions courteously and respectfully.
Dedicated IP Address
With a static IP, you are able to maintain a level of independence
for your web site. Without a dedicated IP address you will share
your IP with other web sites. Our users have not experienced any
problems using the shared IP method.
Domain Pointers
A domain name pointer is a domain name which simply points to
your account. In other words, domain name pointers allow you to
have as many domain names point to your website as you wish. For
example:
would each point to the same web site - no need to copy or maintain
multiple directories.
Personalised Name Servers
Add anonymity to your account with personalised name servers.
When someone does a whois or traceroute on your domain it will
appear as ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com.
Customize MX Records
Start your own free email service like Hotmail. Visitors will
be able to sign up for a free email address at your domain (username@yoursite.com).
Users will return often to read and write email messages and every
message they send will promote your site and attract new visitors.
